The gardens comprise of three meadows which were part of the smallholding that was Trengilly Wartha until development of the inn started in the 1950’s.

The steps lead to the first meadow, they, along with most of the terracing, were built in the late eighty’s and early ninety’s. The spring fed pond was dug in 1990, before that this whole boggy area was overgrown with willow and was very inaccessible. The pond was planted by Penrose Water Gardens of Threemilestone, Truro.  The tree on the island is a swamp cypress (Taxodium distichum), the walnut in the centre of the lawn does bear fruit but the squirrels usually get to them before we do! The other notable tree in this area is the Liriodendron tulipifera aureomarginatum at the top of the garden. The bamboos are from Carwinion.

The second meadow is essentially a collection of plants that we have bought or been given over the years. Trengilly in 1988 was covered with bramble and blackthorn and had several old vehicles rusting away in it. Plants of possible note include a Gleditsia triacanthos “Sunburst”(very slow growing), 2 Cedrus deodara, a Cedrus atlantica and a Liquidambar (var ?), which is stunning in the autumn. In the bottom right hand corner is a newly planted bog garden.

The third meadow, through the glade, is our favourite place to get away from it all. Totally isolated and surrounded on all sides it is magical spot, ideal just to contemplate and unwind from the stresses of inn-keeping.

The land at the top, above these three meadows, we like to keep pretty wild. It helps keep the frost at bay, protects our water source from nitrates and is a great little sanctuary for small mammals, birds and butterflies.

The area behind the hotel is made over to our small private gardens and service areas and are not open (nothing missed – we promise).
